The smallest amount of time a soul trap enchantment can have is that the enemy must die within one second of casting. Since zero seconds is less than one second, the soul trap succeeds.Plus they're an easy way to get filled soul gems. They're a form of magical trap. You're going to have to get some resistances if you don't want them to kill you. Dragons and mages will be a big problem too. Just another type of trap. If you avoid the blast and grab the soul gem it will stop firing at you.The trapping of the white souls is fine, but the trapping of the black souls is an evil act, IIRC. Black soul gems are illegal (you will find them in the possession of the wizards living in the dark caves, the one you can buy from the elf whats-his-name at the College are implied to be the black market)..
